Southern Cross Wildlife Care

Howard at Work

“If I can do something to alleviate the stress, pain and suffering of these animals…that’s why I do this work.”
Dr. Howard Ralph, Founder

SCWC was founded by our veterinarian with long standing wildlife specialist experience, Dr. Howard Ralph. A part of his dream was to establish Southern Cross Wildlife Care for the sole purpose of treating and caring for injured, sick and orphaned wildlife.

Howard has a passion equalled to none and has dedicated most of his life towards caring for our long-suffering and often misunderstood wildlife. He has volunteered his skills and expertise to various animal welfare groups and causes that are helping Howard fulfill the dream.

Howard became acutely aware that a Wildlife Care Centre was a must, if wildlife were to be afforded the treatment and rehabilitation that they were so desperately needing.

Why is Southern Cross Wildlife Care so special?
We believe that all wildlife rescue groups are vitally important but our organisation is in the privileged position to have our own full-time veterinarian with a wealth of experience. Wildlife veterinarians are extremely hard to find and even though Howard has attained these rare skills, his compassion and determination are even rarer to find.

Wildlife carers come from far and wide as Howard is often their last hope. No wild creature is ever turned away, even the most hopeless of ‘cases’. Howard’s workload is expanding with each week that passes, as the injuries and accidents inflicted on wildlife are escalating, therefore we need to expand our service.

How long has SCWC been established?
Southern Cross Wildlife Care started 5 years ago, with a small team of people who are helping to realise the dream. A part of this dream was to establish a Wildlife Care Centre that was designed and created for the sole purpose of attending wildlife in need. We are delighted and proud to announce that our Wildlife Care centre is functional and now helping wildlife. However, we need your ongoing assistance if we are to continue caring for the thousands of sick and injured animals that Howard treats.

How does SCWC raise its funds?
SCWC raises all of its own funds by initiating various fundraisers, via our website and by word of mouth by those that witness first hand the incredible work that Howard does.

Sadly, his patient list is expanding and we receive no government funding or assistance. We all feel very strongly about our precious and declining wildlife and we are committed to assisting each and every creature that comes through the door.

Where is the SCWC Centre?
Our Care Centre is in the Southern Tablelands but Howard also treats sick and injured wildlife in Sydney. However, Howard has to travel every fortnight to the Southern Tablelands to attend to the growing number of animals that are injured or too sick to travel.

Such a service requires great commitment and devotion which highlights just how rare and individual Howard is.

The fact that without your help we can not survive and we can not continue to treat the many thousands of animals that Howard attends to each year. No one in SCWC is paid a wage and our costs for medical equipment, drugs, power, maintenance, oxygen, food, cages etc. are rising. the reality is we really need your help and support if we are to continue with this very vital service.
